Partially identified photo of Al Capone
Hot Springs, Arkansas.
![]() Hot Springs, Arkansas, 1926, Al Capone photo taken with a group of men.
Special thanks to Mr. Randall Lipschultz, and the Lipschultz family for permission on posting the photo!
What is 100% positive on this particular photo is the date, the place, and five of the participants posing for the photo. I decided to take a stab at identifying some of the people. Three previously unknown characters were uncovered. Number 3, 5 and 7. Number 6 was obvious, and was correctly identified by his son.
Your help is needed on the remaining 2 unidentified people. Keep in mind, just because someone is posing in a photo with Al Capone, that does not mean they are gangsters. They could also be aquaintances such as reporters, sports writers, business people, artists etc.... They could also be people that met up at the same place during a vacation. Hot Springs was the place to be for a getaway, golf, relaxing. It was also especially known for it's healing sulphur bath houses.
Can you identify the missing two?
This is a moment where relatives, history buffs, and history sleuths shine If you have any positive identity to whom the two unidentified people are in the below photo, please send me an email at alcaponemuseum@gmail.com
Where exactly?
![]() ![]() Al Capone and friends on Fountain Street, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Google screenshot of same spot today.
Note the wall and steps. This location is just steps away from The Arlington Hotel where Al Capone and his family stayed.
When was the photo taken?
The photo was taken in spring of 1926. This was around the same time that Capone was on the lam from Chicago authorities. William McSwiggin, the Chicago Assistant's State's attourney was machinegunned while visiting some known gangster friends.
There was talk that Capone, along with Robert "Big Bob" McCullough were in the automobile wielding the machine gun while on the driveby.

In the original snap there are written identifications. These may have also been added in later years. As far as I can ascertain, some these identifications are to be accepted as correct and as fact. The date is spot on. 1926. The place is Hot Springs, Arkansas. SEE Hot Springs
Al Capone of course, is spot on! The fifth man, left to right is identified as 'Tony'
This is also correct! It is Anthony Goebel, also known as New York gangster Gaetano Ricci.
Tony was arrested with Louis "Little New York" Campagna in Chicago. He was later associated to Anthony Accardo, and Paul "The Waiter" Ricca. The New York - Chicago mob connection.
TONY
![]() ![]() Tony (Anthony Goebel) aka Gaetano Ricci. Photo on right shows Ricci with Louis Campagna.
Next up, the gentleman called "Bob"
It's correct and is Robert "Big Bob" McCullough! It would also be spot on for him being there exactly at the same time Capone is there. Both were wanted for the McSwiggin hit. This photo is identified by his living son Patrick. So you can't beat that as far as authentication!
BOB
![]() ![]() Bob is Robert "Big Bob" McCullough.
(Photo on the right kindly supplied by Mr. Patrick McCullough)
TOTIE
Totie (probably nickname) For gun toter?
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pay particular attention to missing hair on eyebrow, lips, nostrils, chin. Indentation on cheek.
Extras are wearing the same fedora. Left photo is taken in 1926 while photo on right is taken in 1928.
![]() The gentleman is Frank Perry, aka "Beige"!
Perry was known as a Capone bodyguard. in 1927, he was arrested with other Capone gunsels in front of a Chicago police station while trying to get to Joe Aiello who was inside. Perry was also at Capone's side while at St. Margaret's Hospita in 1928. This is when Capone accidently shot himself at a golf course.
Freddy
![]() Freddy
Not many Capone gunsels were named Fred.
![]() Freddy would definitely be Fred Di Giovanni which is seen here sitting next to Jack McGurn.
It's amazing how a simple smile can match up the person to another photo. Otherwise the stern looking gunsels are sometimes hard to match up in a relaxed setting when they are not on guard.
![]() To compare oranges to oranges I needed a photo of Di Giovanni smiling. In this shot, we can see him just above McGurn's arm smiling! Let's close in for a better side by side comparison.
![]() ![]() The photos are 5 years apart (1926-1931).
Keep in mind in the right shot his head is tilted down and to the side..
![]() Looking at the similar features, eyes, nose, cheeks, chin, that particular smile, and named Fred, in my opinion, I would say it's a definite match!
![]() ![]() Close up.
![]() (1) Alphonse Capone (2) Unidentified (3) Frank Perry (Beige)
(4) Unidentified (5) Gaetano Ricci aka Tony Goebel
(6) Robert Larry "Big Bob" McCullough
(7) Fred "Cowboy" Di Giovanni
The non Identified
The persons remained to be identified are as follows.
Harry, and the guy where Grandpa Swaney and Ziggy is written. Swaney might be a guy who gave this photo to with the nicknamed Ziggy, and should not be considered used identifying person number 2).
Here are the closeups of the unidentified
2nd person next to Capone, and Harry
![]() Harry
![]() I had thought that Ralph Sheldon, who just happened to be with Capone in Hot Springs at the very moment the photo with the unidentified was taken, may have been in fact Harry. I'm not 100% satisfied with this identification.
Capone is wearing a bow tie just as he is in the top photo of this web page. This fits the 1926 timeline.
![]() ![]() Harry and Ralph Sheldon.
Other Capone gunsels named Harry were Harry Heiter, Harry Busch etc..
I have no photo of these individuals for cross reference
![]() ![]() The second guy next to Capone
No, the second gentleman is NOT George 'Bugs' Moran! Yes, the guy does ressemble an older version of him, but it's not him! This was nonsense made up by a Capone relative.
Photo to the left is 1926, and photo of the real Moran (right) is 1925. Note the pronounced cleft chin (red circle) on the real Moran which is situated at the bottom, while the one to the left is in the upper region.
We have to take into account that Moran hated Capone with a passion! They were never really on any friendly terms!
Again, if you have any info on the two unidentfied gentlemen in this photo,
then feel free to send an email at alcaponemuseum@gmail.com
A heartfelt thank-you to Mr. Randall Lipschultz, and Mr. Patrick McCullough for their help, and for the photos supplied! Their dedication to preserving history has helped make this web page possible!
